“Do not say about those who are killed in the way of
Allah, “They are killed.” Rather, they are alive, but you perceive not”. (The
Holy Qur’an 2:154)
In other words it
can be said that those who die in the process of defending the faith of Allah
or executing a noble deed are evidence of the basic goodness of man. They
become immortal though invisible and dear to Allah. Over the centuries, the
concept of martyrdom (shahdat) has been exploited to worship graves and talk to the dead
hoping that they would intercede with Allah and fulfill requests made to them.
Quite often Muslims in a state of denial about someone’s death declare that
person as a “shaheed” (martyr). In general if a large number of people are
prepared to die or suffer for a definite cause, one can’t help wondering if
that cause has some sense and legitimacy.
