Nawaz Sharif’s Money Trail

Way back in September, 2016 when the Panama scandal became public and a number of news reports appeared in the press, I wrote a blog titled “Immaculate Enrichment.” In it I had suggested that the money with which Nawaz Sharif had acquired the London properties may have come from Pakistani state coffers, but in view of caution I refrained from speculating on how this could have happened. As the public discussion unfolded it was stated that GIK, Benazir and Gen. Musharraf had all carried out thorough investigations but had failed to unearth any evidence of corrupt practices by him. When his friends asked him about his extraordinary fortunes, he just laughed it out saying he had got lucky.
Moreover, when his trial for assets beyond means started, he stone-walled completely and did not offer any documents or records of transactions relating to the properties. According to NAB laws inability to justify assets by a public office holder is by itself a crime and he was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Soon afterwards his brilliantly wily daughter Maryam managed to arouse a sleezy scandal about the judge who had sentenced him with the help of obviously doctored audio and video recordings hoping to get his sentence set aside. It has not happened yet. But having seen the true horrible face of the man who failed a record three times as prime minister, it seems that the money trail he has been hiding for so many years must be unearthed.
It all started in the seventies of the last century when Pakistan embarked upon the quest for an atomic bomb and the Kahuta uranium enrichment project was initiated. As soon as news about the construction of a gas centrifuges to enrich uranium reached the western intelligence agencies, a wide-ranging ban on export of equipment and material useful in the project was imposed. The problem was circumvented by setting up dummy trading offices in various countries and anonymous offshore bank accounts. Equipment, instruments and materials were sourced from different countries, paid for honestly from the clandestine accounts and routed through various countries avoiding the ban. This procurement arrangement later became known as the A.Q. Khan network. Nothing unusual as the technique is used by sensitive agencies of many countries.
When Nawaz Sharif became prime minister, he became the custodian of a huge secret fund in foreign currency from which he would order transactions on request from the managers of Kahuta. Since there was no audit of the secret fund and the transaction orders were coded there was nothing stopping him from opening his own offshore accounts and transferring money to them without being caught. Probably, the same money was used in 1993 and later to buy properties abroad. He may have repeated the exercise when he became prime minister a second time and perhaps even the third. Nawaz visited the Virgin Islands at least once, probably more, when he was prime minister. He was also smart enough to close the accounts with Mossack Fonseca of Panama in 2014 and have the companies delisted in 2015.
This explains why he constantly refused to justify the ownership of those properties by any tangible documents. Any of those could have pointed to a clue to the money trail which would have led to the secret state coffers.
If the records have not been destroyed already, it should be possible to trace the money trail of Nawaz Sharif’s overseas properties. Moreover, since the PPP leadership that followed in the footsteps of PML(N) was quick to learn from its predecessors, some of Asif Zardari’s overseas properties may also by traced in the process.
Let us see how much money can be recovered in this way.

Mirror to Camera

How do you know what you look like. You can see your hands, feet, legs and torso. But you cannot see your face because eyes are fix in your face itself. To know what your face looks like you need to look into a mirror. By looking at the reflected image in the mirror you know what you look like. You can also find out about your physical structure and overall features by looking into a tall mirror. As a matter of fact I discovered my bulging abdomen only after looking at myself in profile in a full height mirror.

Think about a time when mirrors where not common. In those days people were not much occupied with comparing their own appearances with others. Instead their perception of their own personalities was dependent on how others reacted to their presence and behaviour. By trial and error they adjusted their behaviour until they felt that others were comfortable with them.

With the advent of the mirror men and women became more preoccupied with their facial appearances and a whole industry of facial grooming for men and women came into existence. Starting with shaving sets and makeup kits, nowadays there are there are beauty salons, parlors and grooming centres at almost every bus stop. On the othr hand a "who cares" social attitude seems to be the order of the day. It seems unfortunate that now a days concern for the feeling of others has a lower priority than one's own appearance.

However in a new wave of evolution we find video cameras commonly available in mobile devices which are frequently used for recording images and actions of others. It would be a good idea to fix a video camera in a suitable location to record your own normal actions and speech. You may be surprised that your demeanor is quite different from what you think it is. Once you know where improvements can be made in your manners and speech it should not be so difficult to develop a more pleasant personality.

Sapien Thinks - 1

Recently I was gifted the book "Sapiens a brief history of humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari. I have started reading the book and find it extremely interesting. So much so that I cannot delay writing my comments on it untill I have finished it. I hope to write my review in instalments as my reading progresses.
1. Begining:
The book starts with an interesting premis all books are story books. This takes the reader's mind to a state of openness that exists in the childhood when all book are story books. The history of humankind is in fact the history of the evolution of human thought. This is so because human beings can not be perceived as such unless the species has qualities of speech and cognition.
The biblical religions namely Jewism, Christianity and Islam all portray adam the first human being as a groomed, educated and talking person who was created to be God's viceroy on earth. However it seems that when God realised that Adam would not last even a hundred years on earth, Eve had to be created to perpetuate the viceroyalty, although the key to procreation remained with Adam.
However, Harari prefers to stick to the story developed by anthropologists and assumes human beings as having evolved from apes some where in East Africa. Perhaps it is religious influence that has persuaded anthropologists to believe that humankind originated at a single location and spread all over earth to Islands and continents that are oceans apart. Even Harari has named one of the chapters of his book Sapiens "The Tree of Knowledge,” most probably referring to the fruit that brought the downfall of Adam paradise as stated in Genesis in Torah or Old Testament. Nonetheless, the idea of knowledge growing on trees is quite fascinating.
Now, being a bit more scientific, if we regard genetic evolution as a time dependent mathematical function similar to radioactive decay or crystallization then it is possible that human colonies could have emerged in different parts of the world at roughly the same time with slightly different features.

When in US support POTUS. Donald Trump should be allowed to build the wall if he can explain how Humpty Dumpty will be prevented from climbing up, sitting on and falling down from it. Also this wall should be greater than the wall of China and should not become a wailing wall. Donalld Trump boldly accepted the bitter truth that America has lost its greatness. He got elected predident of USA. Imran Khan bravely accepted the painful fact that Pakistani elite have lost their honesty. He became prime minister of Pakistan. Courageous realism works wonders A tweet by POTUS on whether or not US soldiers in Afghanistan or CIA or SEALS were involved in kidnapping and murder in Afghnistan of Pakistani police official might be interesting. The basic safeguarding principle of capitalist democracy is that the money used to acquire private property is not part of personal privacy and public office holders must demonstrate cleanness of all their money. Raucous on Aasia acquittal on blasphemi is throw back of Afia Siddiqui's persecution in USA and European impunity on derogation of the Prophet. Since there were technical flaws in trial process leading to conviction, a retrial was the logical remedy.

1. People are identified by the laws they follow.
2. You are either within law or an outlaw.
3. Laws can be made or amended, but not avoided.
4. Lawmakers are subservient to the laws they make and by default the law enforcers they appoint.

The Mystery Letters

Of the 114 Chapters of the Holy Qur’an 29 start with a verse consisting of one or more letters that are read separately and do not seem to convey any meaning. These are called ‘huruf al muqatt’at’ in Arabic meaning disjointed letters and often referred to as mystery letters. The Islamic scholars who have researched these have come to the common conclusion that only Allah knows their meaning.

However, like any mysterious objects, these letters have been exploited for commercial gain by unscrupulous religious merchants by selling talismans, motifs and magical imagery depicting these mystery letters. Many people have died from lack of medication because they believed that magical imagery would cure them.

As I proceeded in my study of the Holy Qur’an, I realized that starting verses of all chapters (surahs) starting with the muqatt’at had the same sort of introductory statement as the second chapter, The Cow (Al Baqarah).   I tabulated them as given below. A close examination of the table indicates that at some time there may have been 29 volumes of the Holy Quran each staring with the muqatt’at followed by the introductory verses. Probably in the early days of Islam, the 29 books were combined into a single volume without any alteration in text and in the order we see today. Since the original volumes differed considerably in length, for convenience of reciters they may have been divided into thirty equal parts known as “juz”.
There is, obviously, no magic in the huruf al muqatt’at.
